Six! cricket painting by Helen Cooper - Otway & Orford

Otway & Orford are proud to collaborate with contemporary Australian artist Helen Cooper on our stylish and unique cricket inspired silk pocket square, ‘Six!’.

Helen has been painting for the best part of twenty-five years and describes herself as a ‘tonal impressionist’. She works across genres including figurative, still life, landscape and life drawing. Her favoured medium is oils for their fluidity but she enjoys using charcoal for life drawing. Helen likes to work ‘alla prima’, where wet paint is applied on top of wet paint, and this adds a freshness to the carefully observed colours in her impressionist works.

Created in oils on one of her trademark small-sized canvases, Helen’s original work was inspired by her passion for cricket and fully captures the power and beauty of a perfectly executed shot over the boundary ropes. Her ability to capture the essence of cricket meant that Virat Kohli, India cricket captain, was delighted with Helen's painting of him and that one of Helen’s many other highly regarded cricket paintings was selected as the cover artwork for a recent publication, ‘Cricket: Political History of the Global Game 1945-2017’. Notable collectors of Helen’s work include the ‘Australian Sports Museum’ at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, ‘The Childhood Home of Sir Donald Bradman’ in New South Wales and Australian sports poet Chris Driscoll.
